Brendan Shanahan, the only player in NHL history to record over 600 goals and 2,000 penalty minutes in his career, announced his retirement on Tuesday.
"I would like to thank my family and all of the friends who have helped me achieve and maintain my childhood dream of playing in the National Hockey League," Shanahan said. "I am enormously grateful to all of my coaches and teammates I've had the privilege of learning from and playing along side of, throughout my career.
"While I always dreamed of playing in the NHL, I can't honestly say that I would have ever imagined that I'd be this fortunate and blessed. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has helped me fulfill this dream."
In 1,524 career NHL games with New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers, Shanahan has accumulated 656 goals, 698 assists, 1,354 points and 2,489 penalty minutes.
He ranks 11th all-time in NHL history in goals and 23rd in points among.

I haven't had a chance to speak with any of the three players yet, but all signs point to new extensions coming in the not too distant future. I've said imminent before, which means "about to happen," and that's still the case. The final discussions will take place between all parties and they'll finalize all the details. What this means for the Hawks down the road remains to be seen. It's almost certain Bowman will have to move some players at some point. There still isn't a huge rush, as some deals can be completed during the off-season around draft time, but if the right offer came across Stan's table, I'm sure he'll jump on it. -- David Pagnotta
