The New Jersey Devils have signed unrestricted free agent center Rob Niedermayer to a one-year, $1 million contract.
The Devils have also agreed to terms with free agent forward Andrew Peters.
"I felt that we needed a little size and strength down the middle," Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said of Niedermayer. "Now with Travis (Zajac) and (Dainius Zubrus) and Robbie, I think we have three pretty good size, strength center ice men. We know Robbie well, of course. We've played against him enough in the Stanley Cup (Finals). He's had tremendous Stanley Cup experience and can be used in different roles."
Niedermayer, who turns 35 in December, scored 14 goals and seven assists in 79 games with Anaheim in 2008-09.
The native of Cassiar, British Columbia, has compiled 171 goals and 257 assists for 428 points in 1,011 games with Florida, Calgary and Anahiem. A 15-year NHL veteran, Niedermayer was the Panthers' first choice, fifth overall, in the 1993 Entry Draft.
Niedermayer, currently in Kamloops, B.C., is expected to join the team by Monday.
