Players can now sign in Swedish Elite League
TheFourthPeriod.com

A ruling to prevent NHL players to sign in the Swedish Elite League during the lockout was overturned today, which means NHL stars can now sign in the Elitserien.

News of the ruling hit teams in the SEL immediately, as clubs are already making plans to sign several players right away.

Each NHL player will need to be issued an International Transfer Card, which is merely a formality, but can take up to seven days to complete.

Modo is already in the process of signing St. Louis Blues right wing Alexander Steen and Winnipeg Jets defenseman Tobias Enstrom, while Frolunda HC is expected to sign New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson and Dallas Stars left wing Loui Eriksson.

Washington Capitals star center Nicklas Backstrom and teammate Marcus Johansson are expected to join Brynas IF.

It's also being speculated that Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson will soon sign with HV71.

Several other players will receive interest in the coming hours, and days, including the likes of Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Carl Gunnarsson and Detroit Red Wings stars Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen.

Insurance and taxes will be a concern for some NHL stars wishing to sign in the SEL, preventing some bigger name players from signing.

It's believed a number of North American-born players will also attract interest, including Chicago Blackhawks stars Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, the New York Islanders' John Tavares, and Anaheim Ducks sniper Corey Perry.
