Predators still able to spend money

TheFourthPeriod.com

Despite an unsettled ownership issue, the Predators will still be able to re-sign their players and pursue others via free agency, reports the Nashville Tennessean.

William "Boots" Del Biaggio III, who owned 27-percent of the Predators, filed for personal Chapter 11 bankruptcy Friday after being hit with numerous multimillion-dollar lawsuits.

While the team's other owners are exploring the possibility of buying out Del Biaggio's interest or finding another investor, the team will move ahead with business as usual.

"It's obviously a situation you wish didn't happen, but it has nothing to do with the payroll," Predators GM David Poile told the Tennessean.

"As far as payroll, I don't feel it's going to have any effect."

Meanwhile, the Predators appear to be having difficulties trying to re-sign impending unrestricted free agent goalie Dan Ellis.

Ellis' agent, Mike Liut, described negotiations as "in a holding pattern."

According to the Tennessean, an offer has been made and the two sides are still talking.

Liut indicated his concern is that the Predators could have three goalies next season and might end up trading his client.

"Are you signing into something you don't know," Liut asked the paper. "You can get assurances, but assurances only go as far as reality will take them."

Man, this team's been through a lot. It's good to hear the Predators can still move ahead with on-ice business as usual. The concerning part lies with Ellis, right now, as the Predators might be forced to trade a goalie prior to signing him to a long-term agreement - which is what they'd like to do.
