Vanek will be one of the most coveted goal-scorers available this summer, and while he'll receive plenty of attention, the Canadiens will be among the teams he will consider signing with.
"I don't have a city preference. I want to go somewhere to win. I've said that since Day One," Vanek told the media on Saturday.
"(Montreal) is a place where you want to be, especially in the playoffs."
Vanek admitted that the right contract offer will factor into his decision, but reiterated that his priority is to win.
If he stays with Montreal, he firmly believes "we certainly can" win. "I think we've shown it."
While the Habs will be focused on re-signing the likes of Subban and Markov, Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin will try to ink Vanek to a new deal, or look for another goal-scorer this off-season.
The Canadiens expressed interest in Winnipeg Jets left wing Evander Kane last summer and kicked the tires again this season, and could revisit talks between now and the NHL Draft at the end of June.
