Habs, Markov resume discussions

The Montreal Canadiens picked up contract talks with pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Andrei Markov last weekend.

According to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun, Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin met with Markov's agent, former NHLer Sergei Berezin, in South Florida over the weekend.

Berezin told LeBrun they had a very positive meeting and the two sides may not be as far apart on a new contract as many people think.

Markov, 35, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

It's believed the Canadiens are willing to sign Markov to a two-year agreement, while Markov was originally asking for a four-year deal.

Talks are expected to continue and a deal could be ironed out when the Canadiens' season concludes after the playoffs.
