The Montreal Canadiens have acquired defenseman Mike Weaver from the Florida Panthers in exchange for a 2015 fifth-round draft pick.

Weaver, 35, is in the final year of his current contract and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

In 55 games with the Panthers this season, Weaver collected six assists and 23 penalty minutes.

The native of Bramalea, Ontario, has played in 585 career NHL regular-season games with the Atlanta Thrashers, Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues and Panthers, and has accumulated seven goals and 79 assists for 86 points, along with 213 penalty minutes, to date.

Weaver was originally signed by the Thrashers as a free agent on June 15, 2000.
