"The price was big, and we were willing to pay, but it didn't work," Habs GM Marc Bergevin told reporters towards the conclusion the Draft.
The Canadiens were also involved in talks with Vancouver for defenseman Alexander Edler, whom the Canucks have been shopping.
Edler, 27, had his no-trade clause kick in at midnight, which might make it more difficult for the Canucks to deal him.
It's unclear what the Habs were offering for Edler, but it's believed talks will continue throughout the week.
The Detroit Red Wings also pitched an offer for Edler.
According to multiple sources, Bergevin also kicked the tires on St. Louis Blues left wing David Perron and Anaheim Ducks right wing Bobby Ryan, but nothing materialized.
The Habs also received calls for center Tomas Plekanec, and those conversations could continue this week.
