Habs want Subban signed before camp
TheFourthPeriod.com

Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin wants to get P.K. Subban signed to a new contract before the start of training camp, the Montreal Gazette reports.

Bergevin, along with Habs owner Geoff Molson and head coach Michel Therrien, met with the local media yesterday afternoon to discuss the team's plans this season.

"I haven't seen the new (CBA) and we can't get a contract done until it's ratified, but I have had preliminary discussions (with Subban's agent Don Meehan) and we want to get it done as soon as possible," Bergevin told reporters. "My goal from Day One was to sign P.K."

Subban, 23, is a restricted free agent after completing the last year of his entry-level deal last season.

"I've made it pretty clear that I want to play (in Montreal), and play there for a long time," Subban told the National Post earlier today. "My interest is nowhere else but in Montreal. They know that. It's never, ever changed. It's never been a question. If anybody says anything different, they don't know what they're talking about."

Meanwhile, Bergevin acknowledge that he's been involved in some minor trade talk, which is expected to intensify over the next few days as camps are expected to open Sunday.

"If people call, I'll listen and if there's a deal that can improve the team, I'll make it," he said. "When you finished 28th in the league, there's room for improvement."
