Talks pushed until after the season

Contract negotiations between the Canadiens and center Tomas Plekanec has been set aside until after the season, agent Rick Curran confirmed.

Curran first told RDS yesterday that while talks have been very positive, they've been put on the backburner for Plekanec can focus on helping his team on the ice.

Curran reiterated those sentiments to Montreal's La Presse: "This is not an end of discussions between us and the Canadiens. We will resume talks once the season has ended. We have had gone discussions and we fully intend to return to where we left off."

Plekanec, 27, is in the final year of his current contract and can become an unrestricted free agent July 1. He's expressed several times that he wants to stay in Montreal.

"I spoke with (Habs GM) Pierre Gauthier during the GM meetings in Florida recently and we decided that holding these talks for later would be the best decision," Curran said. "The Canadiens are fighting for playoff positioning, everyone is focused on that, and we absolutely do not want these contract talks to be a distraction for the team."

I've spoken with Tomas only a few times this season, but he truly enjoys playing and living in Montreal. Frankly, I'd be a little surprised if he hits the open market. While the team is focused on post-season play, you can be sure management, including Gauthier, is looking ahead and planning for Plan B, C and D. -- David Pagnotta
