In an attempt to bolster their already-hurting defensive corps, the Montreal Canadiens have signed unrestricted free agent blueliner Marc-Andre Bergeron to a one-year, $750,000 contract.
With Andrei Markov out three-to-four months with torn tendons in his left ankle, and Ryan O'Byrne out for several weeks with a lower-body injury, the Canadiens needed of some help on the blueline.
The Habs had already called up Yannick Weber from the AHL, but news of O'Byrne's injury has forced the team to look for outside help.
In 72 games with the Minnesota Wild last season, the 28-year-old scored 14 goals and added 18 assists for 32 points.
Bergeron, who made just over $1.6 million last season, has accumulated 62 goals and 98 assists for 160 points in 339 career NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders, Anaheim Ducks and Wild.
