Habs finished shopping, waiting on Sundin

Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey appears to be finished tinkering with his lineup, at least for the time being.

"For now, we're done," Gainey told the media Thursday afternoon.

The Habs will continue to wait on a decision from Mats Sundin, who plans on taking his time before announcing if he'll return to the NHL next season and with which team he'll be playing for.

Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto remain in the Sundin hunt, while the New York Rangers are no longer believed to be in the mix.

"Certainly, if Mats Sundin changes his mind in the coming weeks and he's interested in joining us, we'll listen," Gainey said.

"Our door is always open to the possibility of adding another player. We have space under the salary cap and if we can find another player that can help our team, we'll enter into those discussions then."

Gainey indicated that things can always change in a matter of moments, and that he'll be ready for any opportunity that arises.

The Habs are not expected to pursue the other superstar will available on the market, Jaromir Jagr.

"I don't know what will happen with him," Gainey said. "I believe he's received offers from two teams. We really like our top [six players]. [Jagr's] not a priority for us."

Gainey also acknowledged his interest in Marian Hossa, who signed with the Detroit Red Wings.

"We had some discussions with his agent," he explained. "But, I don't believe that we were really in the race."

Meanwhile, it appears unlikely the Habs will re-sign center Bryan Smolinski and defenseman Patrice Brisebois.
