Backstrom's injury delays KHL start
TheFourthPeriod.com

Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom may have his eyes set on playing with KHL's Dynamo Minsk during the NHL lockout, but his ankle could push back his playing debut overseas.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the 34-year-old goalie sustained a minor ankle injury last week during a Minnesota-based locked-out skate in St. Louis Park, which has prevented him from getting back on the ice.

Sources confirmed to the paper that Backstrom rolled his ankle while training in Helsinki a couple of weeks ago, but aggravated it in the skate.

While the injury is not major and is the opposite ankle from the one he previously underwent surgery on back in April, it will still delay his signing with Dynamo Minsk.

If Dynamo Minsk still has a spot available for Backstrom once his ankle is healed, the netminder could still spend the lockout in between the club's pipes.

In 46 games with the Wild last season, Backstrom registered a .919 save percentage and 2.43 goals-against average.
