The Minnesota Wild has signed captain Mikko Koivu to a seven-year contract extension worth $47.25 million.
Koivu, 27, had one-year remaining on his current contract.
The native of Turku, Finland, registered 22 goals and 49 assists for 71 points in 80 games with the Wild last season.
Koivu has played in 362 career regular-season games with the Wild and has accumulated 79 goals and 176 assists for 255 points. He was originally drafted sixth-overall by the Wild in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Well, this is definitely an interesting bit of information. After speaking with a Kings-source, I can definitely tell you no contract is close - and Lombardi's said the same thing, so that alone should be enough. However, the Kings are still very much in the mix. They want him, and I'm told LA is a top choice for Ilya (despite reports suggesting otherwise). The Kings want to show Kovalchuk the beauty's Southern California has to offer (better than any video), meet with him and have ownership get in on it, as well. A contract is not close, but that could change significantly later in the week.
