Barker was expecting trade

According to the Edmonton Sun, Minnesota Wild defenseman Cam Barker knew his days as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks were coming to an end.

Barker, who has two-years left on his contract beyond this season, was traded to Minnesota prior to the Olympic trade freeze.

With Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith locked up to long-term deals, Barker knew something was up.

"I knew it was going to happen sooner or later," Barker told the Sun. "Whether it was now or in the summer, they have to unload some guys because they had to shed some salary. But I guess anytime it happens you're going to be a little surprised."

Barker, 23, was drafted third-overall by the Hawks in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He was dealt for veteran defenseman Kim Johnsson.

"He and Johnsson are two different players," Wild head coach Todd Richards told the Sun. "Johnsson is a more fluent skater as far as getting up the ice and getting into the zone, where Barker is more of a guy that will go in the corner and knock you off the puck. But he's also shown some talent offensively and is helping us in that regard."
