Kings sign defenseman Schultz

The Los Angeles Kings have signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Jeff Schultz to a one-year, $700,000 contract.

Schultz, 27, registered three assists and 12 penalty minutes in 26 games with the Washington Capitals last season.

The Kings and Capitals had discussed a trade involved Schultz during the season, but a deal was never agreed upon.

Schultz, a Calgary native, was recently bought out by the Capitals.

In 399 career NHL regular-season games, all with Washington, Schultz has accumulated 11 goals and 64 assists for 75 points.

He was originally drafted 27th overall by the Capitals in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
