According to a team source, the Kings are looking for a solid two-way defenseman with a left-handed shot to play alongside Drew Doughty or Slava Voynov as one of the club's top two defensive pairings.
The Kings kicked the tires on Wade Redden, but the team source denied reports that they were heavily pursuing him.
It's believed the Kings have shown interest in Toronto Maple Leafs defensemen Carl Gunnarsson and Cody Franson, though he is a right-handed shooter.
The Leafs seem reluctant to deal Gunnarsson, and the team balked at a deal for goalie Jonathan Bernier earlier this month, prior to Dave Nonis replacing Brian Burke as Toronto's GM.
Talks between the two clubs may have resumed, as a result of Greene's injury, which could keep him out of the lineup for at least six weeks.
The New Jersey Devils, Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins and Phoenix Coyotes are among the teams currently dangling defensemen.
