Kings to begin contract negotiations
TheFourthPeriod.com

The Los Angeles Kings are expected to pick up contract talks with some of their key free agents this week, most notably Drew Doughty and Wayne Simmonds.

Doughty and Simmonds are in the final year of their respective contracts and both are scheduled to become restricted free agents July 1.

Kings GM Dean Lombardi doesn't anticipate any hiccups in getting either player locked up to a new contract, and the belief is that the Kings want them signed to long-term contracts.

In January, the Kings locked up defenseman Jack Johnson to a seven-year, $30.5 million contract.

It's believed Doughty will seek a similar annual salary, hovering around the $4.5 million mark, though the desired length of his deal is less clear. One source close to the situation told TFP Doughty could ask for a five-year contract.

Simmonds, meanwhile, could see his salary climb around $2.5 million on a shorter-term contract.

It's believed talks between both sides, for both players, could intensify as early as this week.
