Kings still searching for top-six forward

Unable to finalize a new contract for Ray Whitney, the Los Angeles Kings appear to be focused on some of the other assets available for trade.

The Kings had a deal in place with the Carolina Hurricanes for Whitney, contingent on the veteran forward signing a contract extension with the team.

Whitney originally asked for a three-year deal, and the Kings countered with a one-year contract.

The two sides were unable to reach an agreement over the Olympic break and reports out of Raleigh suggest Whitney nixed the deal by refusing to waive his no-trade clause.

As a result, Kings GM Dean Lombardi is believed to be scouring the market for other options.

Atlanta's Slava Kozlov, Toronto's Alexei Ponikarovsky and Columbus' Raffi Torres are all expected to be traded before Wednesday's 3pm ET deadline, while St. Louis' Paul Kariya may also be an option, albeit a more expensive one, salary wise.
