TFP has learned that the Los Angeles Kings have traded defensemen Kyle Quincey and Tom Preissing, and a fifth-round draft pick, to the Colorado Avalanche for left wing Ryan Smyth.
Smyth, 33, had to waive his no-movement clause in order for the trade to be completed.
In 77 games with the Avalanche last season, Smyth tallied 26 goals and 33 assists for 59 points.
"Ryan is the type of player who fits with our team," said Kings GM Dean Lombardi. "He fills an important need as he is a competitive, gritty scoring left winger, and he fits with the overall identity we continue to build here."
Smyth has played in 920 career NHL regular-season games with the Avalanche, New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers, and has recorded 310 goals and 350 assists for 660 points, as well as 733 penalty minutes. He was originally selected by Edmonton in the first round (6th overall) of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.
Quincey, 23, led all Kings defensemen in scoring last season with 38 points (four goals, 34 assists) in 72 games.
"We are pleased to be adding two quality NHL defensemen," said Avalanche GM Greg Sherman. "Kyle and Tom are both versatile players who can contribute at both ends. They will add defensive depth to our lineup."
The Kitchener, Ontario native was the Detroit Red Wings' second pick (132nd overall) in the 2003 Entry Draft.
Preissing, 30, appeared in 22 games for the Kings in 2008-09, tallying three goals and four assists. The Arlington Heights, Illinois native has accumulated 31 goals and 100 assists in 322 NHL games with the Sharks, Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles.
