The Florida Panthers have traded defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to the Calgary Flames in exchange for defenseman Jordan Leopold and a 2009 third-round draft pick (67th overall).

Bouwmeester and Leopold are set to become unrestricted free agents July 1.

Bouwmeester completed his sixth season with the Panthers in 2008-09, recording 15 goals and 27 assists for 42 points.

The Edmonton native has notched 203 points in 471 career NHL games. Bouwmeester was the Florida Panthers 1st round pick (3rd overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Leopold, the 2002 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner as the top U.S., played in 83 games last year while playing for the Avalanche and the Flames, who acquired him in March. He had seven goals and 17 assists.
