Petrell signs in Switzerland

Unrestricted free agent forward Lennart Petrell has signed a one-year contract with Geneva of the Swiss National A-League.

Petrell, 29, registered three goals and six assists for nine points in 35 games with the Edmonton Oilers this past season.

"It's obviously that (staying in) the NHL was my priority this summer, but no opportunities were presented," Petrell said. "Therefore, Europe was a natural destination for me this season."

The native of Helsinki, Finland, has played in 95 career NHL games over two seasons with the Oilers and has accumulated seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points, along with 49 penalty minutes.

He was originally drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the sixth-round (190th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Prior to making the jump to the NHL, Petrell spent almost eight full seasons with HIFK of the Finnish Elite League.
