Oilers close to trading Whitney

The Edmonton Oilers appear to be inching closer to completing a trade involving veteran defenseman Ryan Whitney, sources told TFP on Wednesday.

Whitney, 30, is in the final year of his current contract and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this July.

The Oilers have been trying to deal Whitney for several months, and are expected to pull the trigger on a trade in the near future.

In 24 games with the Oilers so far this season, Whitney has registered three goals and seven assists for 10 points, and 16 penalty minutes.

The Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings and Carolina Hurricanes are believed to be interested in Whitney.
