"It was good, I got lots of ice time, I was playing in all situations, including on the powerplay, which was kind of unusual for me," Smid told the Sun. "But I enjoyed it. The hockey is so much different, especially defensively.
"The systems are different, the rink is bigger. But it was a cool experience for me."
Smid last played for Liberec during the 2004-05 lockout. He's hoping he doesn't have to make a return trip and the NHL season gets underway.
"It was good to see my family and my friends, I enjoyed playing in my hometown," Smid said. "I always figured I would head back there after my NHL career and maybe finish my career there.
"But this was kind of unexpected. I really enjoyed it though, it was great. The team really didn't do that well, but it was a great experience."
Smid strained his knee last month, but indicated that he doesn't have any problems and is in good shape.
"I'm just trying to stay in shape and trying to get ready if camp starts," he said.
