Yakupov officially signs with Neftekhimik
TheFourthPeriod.com

Nail Yakupov, drafted first-overall by the Edmonton Oilers in June, has officially signed on with HC Neftekhimik of the KHL and will play there during the NHL lockout.

Yakupov, 19, was given the Oilers' blessing to play overseas, rather than with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL.

In 42 games with the OHL's Sarnia Sting last season, Yakupov registered 31 goals and 38 assists for 69 points.

The native of Nizhnekamsk, Russia, where his KHL club is based, tallied 49 goals and 52 assists for 101 points in 65 games with Sarnia in 2010-11.

KHL teams are allowed to sign a maximum of three NHL players during the NHL's lockout, while a max salary has been imposed of 65 per cent of what they earn under their NHL contracts.
