Oilers have yet to reach out to Sutter

While reports quickly surfaced that the Oilers would ask Brent Sutter to become their new head coach, the Edmonton Journal claims the team has yet to request an interview to discuss the coaching position.

"There's been so much made of this because I went over to coach in the world championship and (Oilers president) Kevin Lowe was the manager and I have a relationship with Tamby (GM Steve Tambellini)," Sutter told the paper.

"I know (Tambellini) really well. But I have not had one conversation with the Oilers. We never discussed this (coaching) once over there (Helsinki at the worlds). No contact with the Oilers since I've been home either. They may be interested, they may not. Kevin and Steve know where I'm at."

Since the Oilers parted way with Tom Renney last week, Tambellini has remained mum on the search process, refusing to give out any details on possible length of the contract and how many candidates would be interviewed.

Many believe the list of contenders includes Oilers associate coach Ralph Krueger, Sutter, former Carolina Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice, TSN analyst Marc Crawford, former Toronto Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson, and Mike Sullivan, who is a New York Rangers assistant coach.

Tambellini could also consider AHL coach Dallas Eakins of the Toronto Marlies, Jon Cooper of the Norfolk Admirals, and Todd Nelson of the Oilers' AHL farm team.
