Oilers searching for shutdown defenseman

The Edmonton Oilers are among the teams interested in bolstering their blueline in the first half of the season and are in the market for a shutdown defenseman.

Currently last in the Western Conference, the Oilers have struggled in their own zone this season, giving up a league-worst four goals per game.

According to multiple sources, Oilers GM Steve Tambellini is trying to acquire a physical rearguard with a defensive mindset.

Meanwhile, it's believed the Oilers have received some interest in forwards Dustin Penner and Ales Hemsky, though Edmonton does not appear to be overly interested in moving either player at this time.

The Los Angeles Kings have been looking for a top-line left winger for several months.

Both Penner and Hemsky have one-year remaining on their contracts beyond this season.
