Cogliano wants to stay in Edmonton

Oilers forward Andrew Cogliano has seen his name tossed around the trade block for several months, but as the Edmonton Sun reports, he wants to stay with the team.

Cogliano was almost traded to the Ottawa Senators last summer, along with Ladislav Smid and Dustin Penner, for Dany Heatley.

After that deal fell through, Cogliano's name has popped up in a number of trade rumors as the Oilers have been retooling for next season.

"I think it's a situation where the organization is trying to find out who they want for the long haul," Cogliano told the Sun.

Cogliano has struggled this season, but Oilers head coach Pat Quinn believes it's only a matter of time before he finds his groove.

"He's improved and we're trying to give him more responsibility. He's given good effort," Quinn told the Sun. "We know (he) needs work in the defensive zone ... (and) he wants to carry the puck about two to three feet from the net and, in the NHL, I don't care how good you skate, that doesn't work."

Cogliano, 22, is in the final year of his contract and can become a restricted free agent July 1.

Cogliano isn't in a situation where the Oilers want to get rid of him. Quite the opposite. They like him, but because of his age and his potential, he's an asset that they can use to bring in a potentially higher return. If the right deal comes along, they'll consider it. Otherwise, they like what they've got. -- David Pagnotta
