Oilers trying to unload contracts

Edmonton Oilers GM Steve Tambellini is looking to move a number of his veteran, high-priced players, but he's finding it to be a difficult task.

According to the Ottawa Sun, the Oilers are shopping defensemen Sheldon Souray and Lubomir Visnovsky, and center Shawn Horcoff, all of whom make move than $5 million per season.

One unnamed league executive told the Sun, "There contracts are going to make it tough for them to improve."

The Oilers are trying to acquire a first-line forward to complement Ales Hemsky, who is out for the season with an injury, next year.

If the Oilers are going to move any of those three players, it will come closer to the trade deadline. Nobody will take on that kind of salary at this stage of the season unless they're unloading a big contract of their own. -- David Pagnotta
