The Detroit Red Wings are generating plenty of interest in defenseman Brendan Smith, who is in the final year of his contract.
Smith, along with forwards Thomas Vanek, Steve Ott, Tomas Jurco and Tomas Tatar, are among the players the Red Wings have held trade talks about, most of whom could be dealt by next Wednesday's trade deadline.
Several teams are in need of a defenseman and have called Red Wings GM Ken Holland about Smith's availability.
During Tuesday night's "Insider Trading" segment on TSN, TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reported the Red Wings are going to speak with Smith's agent this week about the possibility of a contract extension, which could result in a deal or a trade.
With the expansion draft being a factor for many teams, the Red Wings could discuss a new contract with Smith and look to sign him in the off-season and still trade him by the deadline.
Vanek is also expected to be moved, and his salary cap hit of $2.6 million is very attractive to a number of teams, including the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks.
