Wings re-sign Smith to 2-year deal

The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Brendan Smith to a two-year contract worth $2.525 million.

Smith, 24, had filed for salary arbitration, but that will now be avoided.

The Toronto native registered eight assists and 36 penalty minutes in 34 games with the Red Wings this past season.

In 48 career NHL regular-season games with the Red Wings, Smith had accumulated one goal and 14 assists for 15 points, along with 49 penalty minutes and a plus-4 rating.

Smith was originally drafted 27th overall by the Red Wings in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
