Red Wings sign Weiss to five-year contract

The Detroit Red Wings have signed unrestricted free agent center Stephen Weiss to a five-year, $24.5 million contract.

Weiss, 29, picked up one goal, three assists and 25 penalty minutes in 17 games with the Florida Panthers last season.

In 654 career NHL regular-season games, all with Florida, Weiss has accumulated 145 goals and 249 assists for 394 points.

Weiss was originally drafted fourth-overall by the Panthers in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Earlier in the day, the Red Wings signed unrestricted free agent right wing Daniel Alfredsson to a one-year, $5.5 million contract.
