Howard tweaks groin again

Red Wings netminder Jimmy Howard injured his groin, which already cost him three games this month, and is not likely to play against the New York Rangers Wednesday night, the Detroit News reports.

The 27-year-old has been listed as day-to-day and the team is hoping the injury won't keep him out of action too long since backup goalie Joey MacDonald is sidelined due to a sore back.

"I don't think it's anything major," coach Mike Babcock said of Howard's injury. "There was tightness (during Monday's loss to the Capitals) and they're (trainers) trying to be cautious."

In 52 games this season, Howard has posted a .920 save percentage and 2.15 goals-against average.

Ty Conklin, who was sent down to the AHL's Grand Rapids on Feb. 20, was recalled and is expected to start against the Rangers if he clears waivers before returning to the Red Wings.

In 11 games with the Red Wings this season, Conklin has registered a .878 save percentage and 3.40 goals-against average.

All the goaltending issues left Babcock searching for some humor.

"Jimmy Bedard is starting in New York," Babcock said, suggesting the club's goaltending coach could be the answer.
