"I don't think it's anything major," coach Mike Babcock said of Howard's injury. "There was tightness (during Monday's loss to the Capitals) and they're (trainers) trying to be cautious."
In 52 games this season, Howard has posted a .920 save percentage and 2.15 goals-against average.
Ty Conklin, who was sent down to the AHL's Grand Rapids on Feb. 20, was recalled and is expected to start against the Rangers if he clears waivers before returning to the Red Wings.
In 11 games with the Red Wings this season, Conklin has registered a .878 save percentage and 3.40 goals-against average.
All the goaltending issues left Babcock searching for some humor.
"Jimmy Bedard is starting in New York," Babcock said, suggesting the club's goaltending coach could be the answer.
