Stuart's wife and kids, two sons and a stepdaughter, live in San Jose.
"It is going to be a tough decision," Stuart told the Gazette. "It's not going to be all based on hockey and what I want for my career. It's going to be a little bit (about) family, which is important. Those are things I still have to kind of sort out, try to figure out what's going to be best for everyone."
The pending unrestricted free agent has become a valuable top-four defenseman since the Wings acquired him from the Los Angeles Kings at the 2008 trade deadline.
Although he enjoys playing in Detroit, where he has been paired up with fellow blueliner Niklas Kronwall for most of his time with the Wings, he has yet to commit to serious discussions on an extension.
"I'm sure in the next few weeks I'll probably chat with Ken (GM Holland) a little bit about it, but that's really as far as it's gone," he added.
In 49 games this season, Stuart has collected four goals and five assists for nine points, and has recorded a plus-13 rating.
