To compete with top contenders in the Western Conference, the Red Wings could become major players in the upcoming trade deadline and shop for another forward with size and scoring ability.
Rumors have pointed out Carolina Hurricanes center Tuomo Ruutu as a potential candidate, as he is in the final year of his contract at a cap hit of $3.8 million. Holland could also decide to shop on the Canes' blueline and acquire defenseman Bryan Allen.
Meanwhile, Edmonton Oilers right wing Ales Hemsky has also been mentioned on several occasions as a good fit for the Wings. The 28-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and could benefit from a change of scenery.
The Wings could also invest in a backup goaltender for talented starter Jimmy Howard and look to sway New York Islanders Evgeni Nabokov to play the rest of his contract for a Cup contender.
