With Nicklas Lidstrom, Niklas Kronwall and Brad Stuart leading the Wings' blueline, GM Ken Holland hopes to add another stud defenseman in the next week.
The Free Press claims the Wings were eyeing Andrei Markov, but he signed a three-year deal with the Montreal Canadiens last week.
Habs defenseman James Wisniewski is expected to test the waters and will be a target for Holland, though the Wings are cautious as his price tag could sky rocket.
"That's the biggest thing," Holland told the paper. "First all, if you're going to get involved in unrestricted free agency, the high-end guys, you have to pay premium dollars. That's why they're hitting the market.
"We're going to sign somebody, but I don't know if it's going to be a more expensive guy or a cheaper one -- we're going to debate."
Veteran Ed Jovanovski, who will not be back in Phoenix next season, is also someone of interest for the Wings, while San Jose's Ian White and Vancouver's Christian Ehrhoff are also on Detroit's wish list.
