Former Red Wing and 25-year NHL veteran Chris Chelios has been playing well in the AHL so far this season and continues to wait for an NHL team to come knocking on his door, reports The Grand Rapids Press.
Chelios has been playing for the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League, and has registered one goal, six assists and a plus-6 rating in seven games so far this season.
The 47-year-old future Hall of Fame defenseman opted to sign with the Wolves to stay closer to his family and wait for an NHL team to contact him.
"The biggest issue, and I've said it for 10 years now, is I've played this long because I haven't had to relocate and be away from my kids," Chelios told the Press. "I got two daughters in Michigan that got cheated for a long time not having their dad around, but they're doing great.
"I've got four days after this to spend time with them again. So as long as the kids are OK and my wife can handle everything, then I'll just keep playing and see what happens."
According to the paper, Chelios' time in the AHL might not last that much longer, as the interest from NHL teams could be rising.
For the time being, though, Chelios isn't sure when he might be able to make the jump back into the NHL for a 26th season.
"I have no idea. I thought it would be easy to find a job prior to this year, but I understand," he said. "It's been the same story with every team. They've got to see if the young guys can play, you've got guys under contract, the money situation with the cap. I'm realistic, I know I'm 47.
"But I think there are plenty of teams I could help."
