Hossa rejects Red Wings offer

According to several published reports, impending unrestricted free agent right wing Marian Hossa has turned down a long-term contract offer pitched by the Red Wings.

Hossa, who made $7.45 million this past season, will test the market tomorrow and it's unlikely he'll be returning to Detroit next year.

The Red Wings reportedly offered Hossa a lengthy deal worth around $4 million per season. Sportsnet claims Detroit's deal was for 10-years.

Wings GM Ken Holland told the Detroit Free Press he was "not optimistic" about getting Hossa locked up to a new contract.

"I'm willing to move a player or two if the cap number makes sense for us," Holland told the paper Monday night. "Other teams can offer a lot more money.

"We've made our decisions. I'm very comfortable with the core of our team. We've put our best foot forward with Marian. They know it. Marian and (agent) Ritch Winter have to look at all their options."

Hossa has expressed his desire to re-sign with the Red Wings, but at a competitive salary, worth closer to $6 million per year.

Presuming Hossa is no longer in Detroit's plans, Holland can focus on getting unrestricted free agent Mikael Samuelsson and restricted free agent Jiri Hudler inked to new contracts.

From the Editor: Not entirely surprised here, simply because of Detroit's close proximity to the salary cap. You can't blame either party. Hossa will get solid dollars via the free agent market, and I know the Montreal Canadiens and Los Angeles Kings will be trying hard to sign him. -- David Pagnotta.
