Zetterberg inks 12-year extension

TheFourthPeriod.com

The Detroit Red Wings have signed left wing Henrik Zetterberg to a 12-year contract extension worth $72 million.

Zetterberg, 28, was in the final year of his current contract and could have become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

In 45 games with the Wings so far this season, Zetterberg has accumulated 17 goals and 26 assists for 43 points.

The Red Wings will formally announce the signing later today at 2pm ET.

Last year's Conn Smythe Trophy winner (playoffs MVP) has accumulated 169 goals and 206 assists for 375 points in 400 career regular-season games.

Zetterberg was originally drafted by the Red Wings in the seventh round (210th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

From the Editor: Great contract for both parties. The Red Wings get their star locked up long-term and at a solid annual rate of $6 million. Zetterberg, meanwhile, gets a huge contract and guarantees his future in Detroit. It's win-win for both sides. Next up for the Red Wings... they have to decide if they can sign Marian Hossa long-term. -- David Pagnotta.
