The Detroit Red Wings have avoided arbitration signing restricted free agent center Valtteri Filppula and have signed him to a five-year deal worth $15 million.
Filppula, 24, played in 78 games last season, scoring 19 goals with 17 assists and a plus-16 rating.
In 155 career NHL games, the native of Vantaa, Finland, has accumulated 29 goals with 25 assists and is a plus-25.
He was originally drafted in the third round pick by the Red Wings in 2002.
