Stars continue to keep eye on Leafs

The Dallas Stars are keeping close tabs on the Toronto Maple Leafs, fueling speculation that the two teams are engaged in trade discussions.

The two teams have been scouting each other all month, with two of the Stars' top scouts listed for the Leafs' game Saturday night at home against the Montreal Canadiens.

Stars GM Jim Nill is looking to upgrade his blueline by the Feb. 29 trade deadline, and the Stars have been linked to Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf in the past.

Phaneuf, 30, has five-years left on his contract after this season. His annual salary cap hit is $7 million.

He also owns a limited no-movement clause, where he can list 12 teams he will accept a trade to.

The Stars inquired about Phaneuf's availability last season, but trade talks were halted. Talk surrounding the Leafs on Saturday suggested that Phaneuf remains a point of interest for Dallas.
