Whitney likely leaving Dallas

Veteran left wing Ray Whitney isn't expected to re-sign with the Dallas Stars this off-season and will likely look to extend his playing career with another organization.

Whitney, who turns 42 on Thursday, is set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1 and the belief is that he will not be extended a contract offer by the Stars.

The Stars have roughly $20 million in available salary cap space, according to

Whitney is coming off a two-year, $9 million contract and it has been widely speculated that he could ink a deal with the Phoenix Coyotes this summer.

He spent two seasons with the Coyotes prior to joining the Stars and recently bought a home in Phoenix, where he plans on spending his off-season with his family.

If Whitney is willing to sign at a discounted rate, he could ink a one-year deal with the Coyotes in July.

In 69 games with the Stars this season, Whitney registered nine goals and 23 assists for 32 points.
