Stars could target Stastny this summer

If Colorado Avalanche center Paul Stastny hits the open market July 1 as an unrestricted free agent, the Dallas Stars could be one of the teams hot on his trail.

Stastny, 28, will see his five-year, $33 million contract expire June 30, upon which he'll be a free agent.

The Avalanche will try to re-sign Stastny, but the Dallas Morning News suggests that he is on the club's radar this off-season.

Several teams in need of a centerman will have interest in Stastny this off-season and could try to acquire his rights if the Avs find themselves unable to lock him up to a multi-year contract extension.

Stastny will likely see his salary drop from $6.6 million per year to roughly $6 million, regardless of where he ends up.

In addition to the Stars, the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres, Nashville Predators and New York Rangers are among the teams that may approach Stastny in July, or the Avs prior to that.
