Despite numerous reports linking the Stars to Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Tomas Kaberle, the team is not in the mix for the veteran All-Star.
Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk told the Dallas Morning News that he is not trying to acquire Kaberle from the Leafs, but admitted that he's held trade talks with a number of other teams.
The Leafs have a window in Kaberle's contract, from the day of the NHL Entry Draft through Aug. 15, to trade Kaberle without his consent. If he's not dealt today, his no-trade clause kicks back him.
Kaberle, 32, has one-year remaining on his contract.
The Stars, however, in the market for a puck-moving defenseman and a first- or second-line winger. Nieuwendyk also indicated that he is not close to completing a trade.
Center Mike Ribeiro has also been the subject of several trade rumors since last season, primarily due to his large contract. The Stars have been shopping him, but "they're not interested in giving him away," a source close to the team told TFP.
