First-year GM Joe Nieuwendyk is becoming very aware of how hectic the trade deadline season can get, reports the Dallas Morning News.
According to the paper, Nieuwendyk has met with his scouting staff and has outlined his team's needs as the deadline quickly approaches.
With the Stars still in the playoff picture, it's uncertain which direction Nieuwendyk will take once Mar. 3 arrives.
"You definitely want to give your team every chance to compete, and that is a huge part of how we will look at things," Nieuwendyk told the Morning News. "I do believe these five games leading up to the Olympic break will be very big for us. We play four of them on the road, we've struggled on the road, and we have the opportunity to make a statement that we've addressed those issues and improved our team. If we do that, I definitely think that sends a message."
Nieuwendyk is faced with the decision of whether or not to trade veteran goalie Marty Turco, who is in the final year of his contract.
The Stars would like to replace Turco with a younger netminder, such as Atlanta's Kari Lehtonen, Montreal's Jaroslav Halak and Vancouver's Cory Schneider.
According to the Morning News, the Stars may also move tough-guy Steve Ott, who is looking for a new contract worth around $3 million per season.
