Stars trying to send Avery to Rangers?

TheFourthPeriod.com

With Sean Avery no longer part of Dallas' plans, the Ottawa Sun reports the Stars have held talks with the New York Rangers about a trade.

The paper claims the Stars could ship Avery back to New York in exchange for defenseman Michal Rozsival. The Rangers would then send Avery to the AHL until he's ready to return to the NHL.

Avery is currently undergoing counseling for his behavior. The Stars announced today that he will no rejoin their organization, and they're seeking other options regarding his playing career.

The Rangers, meanwhile, are still very much in the Mats Sundin race. Moving Rozsival would clear $5 million off the salary cap. While the addition of Avery would tag on $3.8 million against the cap, sending him to the AHL would nullify that amount.

According to the New York Post, Sundin met yesterday with GM Glen Sather and the Rangers' staff. It's believed that his deciding factor when choosing a team won't be money.

From the Editor: The Rangers liked Avery, but didn't want to pay him big bucks. If they move Rozsival and send Avery to the AHL, that will free up the cap space they need to sign Sundin. We'll obviously know much more later in the week. -- David Pagnotta
