Mueller missed all of last season after he sustained a second concussion in just five months during an exhibition game on Sept. 22, 2010.
The young center had recently been practicing with his teammates after sitting out for a period throughout the last month.
He played only in the first three contests this season and has yet to record a point.
To make room for the returning Mueller on its 23-man roster, the Avalanche placed defenseman Shane O'Brien, who suffered a knee injury, on IR, retroactive to Jan. 7.
