Avalanche interested in Chicago's Huet?

TheFourthPeriod.com

The Colorado Avalanche is looking to strengthen their goaltending position and appear to be interested in Chicago Blackhawks netminder Cristobal Huet.

Sources tell TFP the Blackhawks are trying to re-sign impending unrestricted free agent goalie Nikolai Khabibulin.

If the Hawks are successful in re-signing Khabibulin, it's believed they will turn around and trade Huet.

Yesterday, the Avs signed goalie Peter Budaj to a one-year, $1.25 million deal. Budaj will likely be the club's backup next season.

The Denver Post reports the Avalanche is waiting on free agent Swede goalie Jonas Gustavsson, who has listed Colorado as one of his potential destinations.

If the Avs aren't able to sign Gustavsson, they will need to find a No.1 goalie elsewhere, and Huet may be the best option of available goalies on the trade block and in the free agent market.

From the Editor: I'm not sure if Colorado is fully interested in Huet and his hefty contract, but they do need a No. 1 goalie, and he might be the best available. The Avs have other options, though, such as free agents Martin Biron and Ty Conklin. -- David Pagnotta.
