Avs are Sakic's only option

TheFourthPeriod.com

If Joe Sakic returns to the NHL next season, he'll continue to suit up for the Colorado Avalanche, his agent told TFP.

Sakic, who will become an unrestricted free agent July 1, is contemplating whether or not to retire or play another season.

It has been widely speculated that Sakic may consider playing for another team if he does opt to return, but his agent, Don Baizley, rejected that notion.

"The only option he is considering is the Avalanche," Baizley told TFP.

Sakic, 38, has accumulated 623 goals and 1,006 assists for 1,629 points in 1,363 career NHL games with the Quebec/Colorado organization.

Meanwhile, the Denver Post reports Andrew Brunette's agent, Don Reynolds, has yet to speak with the Avalanche about a new contract.

Brunette, 34, can become an unrestricted free agent next Tuesday.

Defenseman John-Michael Liles' agent told the Rocky Mountain News he's held "preliminary discussions" with Avs GM Francois Giguere about a new contract and hopes the two sides can work out a deal.

"We'd like to get a deal done," agent Joe Resnick said.

Goalie Jose Theodore's agent, Don Meehan, continues to speak with the Avs about getting a new deal worked out before July 1.

Sakic deserves to be given the necessary time to think about his future. The 12-time All-Star and two-time Stanley Cup champion is likely to return, but nothing is set in stone. While I understand the Avs need to go ahead with their free agency plans, Sakic can take all the time he needs.
