Blackhawks trying to make everything fit
TheFourthPeriod.com

With new contracts on the horizon for three of the Blackhawks' rising superstars, management is still trying to move some contracts around to free up some cap space.

According to multiple sources, the new deals for forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane and defenseman Duncan Keith are "pretty much ironed out."

However, before the two sides can officially sign the contracts and announce them, Chicago must create enough space as per the "tagging" rule set forth in the current collective bargaining agreement.

As stated in the CBA, a new standard player contract (SPC), though an extension, must fit under a team's current available salary cap for this season (Tagged Payroll Room).

The Blackhawks are actively looking to move at least one body, and several reports have suggested that veteran defenseman Brent Sopel and his $2.333 million cap hit is the most likely player to be traded.

A number of teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, have been approached about Sopel, however some clubs have also inquired about the likes of Patrick Kane and Kris Versteeg, two players the Hawks would rather keep.

It's uncertain, at this point, when a move will be made. A move could be finalized as early as today, however the Hawks are weighing their options, which could stretch trade talks further.
